Facilitated Action Learning Groups
Action learning has become increasingly recognised as a powerful tool for practical learning, since its original development by Revans in the 1940's. It provides a forum for individuals to learn with and through each other as a 'learning set', and provides a structured forum for networking, communication and support.
As experienced facilitators of action learning, we work with defined groups of 5 to 8 staff who have a peer relationship within the workplace. The groups have a continuing membership and commonly meet 4 to 6 weekly for a day or part day of action learning. Group members formulate an agenda which requires them to present and explore issues and challenges, resulting in the generation of an action plan which is reviewed in the subsequent meeting of the group.
Action learning focuses on real issues from participants work lives, and derives practical solutions which participants apply to their work setting. It thus provides a practical mechanism for translating learning into action.
